The true bugs (Hemiptera) are often seen skating around on the surface of streams and ponds. A good example is the Water Strider. There are 6 families of water bugs in Ohio. Water bugs are distinguished by the piercing mouthparts, either an elonged probe or a conical beak. The adults have wings folded over the back; lacking in the larvae, which have wing pads. While most are robust, some are vary elongate (e.g., Water Scorpions)
